Research on Indian Coarser Wool

Indian Coarser Wool as Green Sustainable Building Material

Utilization of Indian Coarse Wool as insulating material for building construction as a green building material and comparison of such coarse wool-based developed products against conventional materials like glass wool or rock wool.

Objectives of the Proposal
  • To explore the possibility to utilize coarse wool for building insulation as green building material.
  • To further explore the possibility of coarse wool for acoustic insulation in buildings.
  • To compare wool-based products against conventional materials like glass wool and rock wool.
Research Objective

Project Progress :

  • Literature survey of existing insulation products like rock-wool, glass-wool, etc. and their performance as thermal and acoustic insulators – ongoing.
  • Industry interaction initiated and attended round table conference on building insulation materials conducted by Centre of Pastoralism at Triveni Kala Sangam, Delhi.
  • Consumables purchased – partly.
  • Initial sampling of insulation material is being carried out.
  • Testing of developed panel with respect to thermal insulation properties as per ASTM D 1518 – ongoing.
  • Testing of developed prototype panel against moth proofing (Bio-assay).
  • Mothproofing treatment to loose scoured wool fibre using Permethrin for durable finish.
  • Designing wool-based insulation panels using natural biodegradable honeycomb structure ready for installation.
  • Initial test results show developed prototypes need modification – redesigning ongoing using 3D corrugated lightweight box customization.
  • Enhancing thermal insulation of wool with graphene by creating Graphene Oxide (GO) with particle sizes of 10.82 to 54.29 microns.
  • Transforming GO into Reduced Graphene Oxide (rGO) and applying it to nonwoven material.
  • Test: Particle size analysis using Beckman Coulter LS13320 Laser Diffraction Particle Size Analyzer (Wet module).
